How to Download Videos from the Web onto your iPhone

When browsing the Internet you often come across videos which you would like to download to your iPhone. As standard the iPhone is somewhat limited in features for downloading multimedia through its web browser but here’s a nice App which does the job well.
Video Downloader Super Lite is the free version of Video Downloader Super+ which allows you to download web based videos onto your iPhone.
Providing an alternative web browser the App lets you navigate to a web based video eg a video on YouTube and download it into your iPhones RAM for offline viewing, and if the video isn’t protected you can even save it to your iPhone’s Camera Roll.
Video Downloader Super allows you to prepare a video for off-line viewing if you know that you are going to be in a poor signal area, or to store videos in a library for long term storage.
Check it out in the Apple App Store know.

Apple Release a Dedicated Podcast App

Podcasts are audio or video recordings that are distributed over the Internet. They are generally released on a regular basis and some have very large followings of dedicated listeners. iTunes has provided Podcast subscription and management tools on computers for a long time but on the iPhone & iPad podcasts have been hidden away deep in the more section of the Music App, but this has now changed with the release of a dedicated Podcasts App from Apple.

20120804-180903.jpgThe Podcasts App provides a user friendly way of accessing all of your Podcast subscriptions from your iPhone, including setting options for auto downloading new episodes, setting how many episodes to keep and when episodes get deleted. Previously it wasn’t possible to manage podcasts at this level from your device so this App is a welcome addition.20120804-181309.jpg

They are many many podcasts available, and getting started for the first time can be daunting, fortunately the Podcasts App can point you in the right direction. As well as providing direct access to the Podcast Catalogue the app provides access to a selection of ‘ Favourite Stations’.

The Favourite Stations section provides access to a small selection of highly rated Podcasts in many different categories, so by choosing a category that interests you, you are bound to find a high quality podcast to listen to, it’s a great feature and makes podcasts more accessible to everyone.

How to watch the Sky Formula 1 Channel on the iPhone

In a previous article I’ve written about the Sky Sports TV App and how to watch Sky Sports on the iPhone, and the App has been updated to include the new Sky Formula One Channel.
Formula One is incredibly popular and there was uproar when a number of races were taken off free TV and put onto Sky TV, but if you are an F1 fan but don’t want to subscribe to Sky then there is now an alternative.

The Sky Sports TV app is provided on a rolling 1 month subscription through iTunes so you can stop paying at anytime by ending the subscription.

20120320-220948.jpg

The App delivers a number of live streaming channels to your iPhone, including Sky Sports 1-4, ESPN, At The Races, and the Sky Formula One channels. The video quality is good even on a 3G mobile connection, so you can keep up to date whilst travelling.
To install the Sky Sports TV App search for Sky Sports in the App Store.

How to Watch Sky Sports on the iPhone (without Sky Subscription)

Sky have provided access to their Sky Go App for a while, which allows Sky Digital customers to watch services on their iPhones and iPads and now there is an option for non sky subscribers, the Sky Sports TV app.
The Sky Sports TV app is aimed at non Sky Customers and lets them make in App purchases to subscribe to the service one month at a time for a very reasonable £9.99. The service provides access to 8 Sky channels, Sky Sports 1,2,3 & 4, Sky Sports News, Sky News, At The Races and ESPN which for the money provides great value of money for sports fans.
The first time you log on you are asked to create a Sky account which is easy to do, and when loaded the App displays now and next information for each channel. Clicking on a channel will provide a complete program guide for that station with an option to watch the live broadcast. If you haven’t got a subscription then you are presented with an option to purchase a months subscription in App through iTunes, this creates a recurring purchase so if you want to end your subscription then you need to manually cancel it.
The video stream works over both 3G and WiFi and the quality of video is good, not as good as BBC iPlayer, but still good. The following pictures show a comparison of 3G and WiFi video streams.

As you can see the image is clearer over WiFi but when the image is moving it still looks smooth and fluid over 3G.

The Sky Sports TV App is a fantastic App which provides a cost effective way for non Sky customers to watch Sky Sports on their iPhone. Those wanting to watch Sky Sports on the Move or just want an alternative and legal way to receive the service should check out the App.

TV Catchup App allows you to watch Live TV on the iPhone

I’ve previously written about TVCatchup in this article, it’s a fantastic free service which allows UK viewers to watch freeview TV stations on the iPhone. The website service has worked on the iPhone for a while but now the service is available through a dedicated App.

20111223-225309.jpg
By removing the need to use a web browser on your iPhone the App simplifies the process of accessing the Channels and importantly switching channels is now significantly easier.

The App provides an online Electronic Program Guide, which provides now and next information for all the available stations.
As with the web service the Video Quality is excellent and looks great on a Retina Screen especially when using a WIFI connection but even when using a 3G network the video remains very watchable.

TVCatchup has been one of the most useful services available to iPhone users and with the launch of the Dedicated App it’s now more accessible then ever.
To install the app search for TVCatchup in the App store.

How to Listen to Radio Stations on the iPhone

Many people use their iPhone to listen to music, either through music stored on their device or through streaming services like Spotify, but many people still enjoy live radio broadcasts and there are several ways to listen to the Radio on your iPhone.

The iPhone doesn’t have an FM radio built-in but it can utilise it’s Internet connection, either wifi or 3G, to deliver radio stations to your handset.

Firstly there’s a great free App called StreamItAll Radio which will let you listen to your favourite Radio Station. StreamItAll contains a massive database of online Radio Stations from around the world, you can simply tell it which country you live in to get your regional channels or you can manually add channels from any region in to your channel list.

I use StreamItall to listen to BBC Radio 2 on my iPhone and the quality is on par with any FM or DAB radio I have listened too.

Alternatively there are dedicated apps which allow you to listen to specific (mainly commercial) radio stations. The functionality of the dedicated apps tends to be more diverse then in StreamItAll, often including news articles, discussion forums or Twitter Feeds and even catch up Radio Facilities, although of course you can only listen to one station or family of stations through each dedicated App. A fantastic example of a dedicated radio channel app is the Talksport Radio App, which is feature well & works really well.

Most radio apps will work over 3G Internet but it’s important to remember that most Mobile Networks set a limit on how much data you can download before you get charged extra. Make sure that you know exactly how your Data plan works, have an unlimited data plan (eg The One Plan on Three) or use Wifi to listen to Radio Stations on the Internet.

How to use your iPhone as a Radio Alarm clock

The iPhone’s standard Clock App has a built in alarm function which works well but only allows you to choose from a limited number of standard alarms.
Beautiful Clock Radio is an attractive iPhone App which allows you to select an Internet based radio station or iPod playlist to wake you up.

The interface changes depending on the current time of day, look at the clock during the day time and you see a lovely bright and illuminating image, look at night and you see an appropriate dark night time.

Beautiful Clock Radio also shows you the weather forecast and using the iPhones GPS functionality this is tailored for your current location.

There are 5 buttons running along the bottom of the screen press one of these and the associated radio station starts to play. You can change the buttons associated radio station by holding down the button and you will be presented with a selection screen where you will be able you select one of hundreds of Radio Stations or supply a URL of your favourite online station.

To set an alarm slide your finger along the bottom of the screen and the alarm settings will be displayed. From here you set the time, frequency, and what type of alarm music wakes you up.

The app is easy to use but if you need help a link to a comprehensive video guide is included in the app.

Beautiful clock radio adds an important piece of missing functionality to the iPhone, turning it into a true travel companion, if you use the alarm function on the iPhone then you should check it out.

Beautiful clock radio can be found in the Apple App Store.

How to Take Better Pictures on the iPhone

How to Take Better Pictures on the iPhone

The iPhone provides a good solid camera facility, by camera phonestanard, and although it’s great to have a good camera in your phone at all times,  the quality of photograph is always going to be inferior compared to high-end dedicated digital cameras. There are however a few tricks that you can  try to really bring out the best from your iPhones Camera.

First lets look at the Built in Camera App that comes as standard with the iPhone.

The Built it iPhone Camera App is pretty basic but it can produce really good results, firstly you don’t have to rely on the software’s auto focus, which tends to focus on foreground objects, you can touch the screen to focus on a specific point or object, this allows you to capture detail on distant objects.  You can also take HDR photos with the iPhone.

What is HDR on the iPhone?

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range imaging and is a technique which adds more detail to photographs, especially in low or high lighted areas of the picture. On the iPhone the technique is implemented by 3 photographs being taken at the same time, one picture is under exposed, on picture is over exposed and one picture is as normal. The 3 photographs are then merged together to show the most detail possible.

In  the 2 pictures below the HDR image appears to be brighter than the non HDR image, and more detail can be seen in the clouds and brick work.

Non HDR Image (Click to enlarge)

HDR Photo (Click to Enlarge)

HDR imaging works well for some but not all shots, fast action shots generally don’t work well with HDR, also be aware that you can’t use the flash on the iPhone whilst taking HDR images. To turn HDR imaging on when using the iPhones Camera App you can select it on the top centre of the ViewFinder screen whilst taking a photo.

You can capture very impressive photographs with the iPhone’s default Camera App, but it does lack a number of key features and many iPhone users install the Camera+ app instead.

Camera+ is available for purchase in the Apple App Store and adds a great deal of functionality when taking a photo, for example you can set a different exposure point to focus point. On the default Camera App the Exposure point is set to the focus point but when taking  a photo with Camera+ you can press the screen to set a focus point and then drag with a second finger to set the exposure point, this allows you to take more control over the photo, as seen in the 2 shots below. Although both shots are taken in almost an identical position, I’ve set 2 different exposure points allowing for 2 different photographs.

Camera+ Picture

Camera+ Picture with different exposure point

In addition to manual exposure points Camera+ includes a virtual light box mode and full picture editing suite, tools which were originally missing from the original default Camera App. As well as imaging editing its possible to apply filters, alter colours and apply image frames.

The following image was originally captured with the default iPhone app and then edited with Camera+ where a clarity filter was added to make the main focus of the image brighter

The iPhone is a very convienient and powerful photography tool which can capture fantastic images.

A Time Lapse Video Created with Instalapse App on the iPhone

I’ve previously discussed the Brilliant Instalapse App and how it creates TimeLapse Videos on the iPhone.

To demonstrate the usefulness and potential of the App I’ve captured the following TimeLapse Video which shows the formation of storm clouds followed by a downpour.
