How to install a SNES Emulator on the iPhone

How to install a SNES Emulator on the iPhone

Emulators are software applications which allow games from one(typically older) platform to be run on a different platform, as in this example running games from the SNES console on the iPhone.
The legality of Emulation often gets called into question but as long as you own both the original hardware and game you should be ok.

To play SNES games on your iPhone.

3) Enter  Snes 9x into the search box and start the search

4) Select the Snes 9x app to view its details and click on install

The Snes9x emulator will now install on your iPhone.  Now you need to copy your backup of your Game Rom(s) to your iPhone. The easiest way to do this is by using iPhone Explorer which lets you browse the contents of you iPhone through your computer.

10) Drag your Roms Folder into the iPhone Explorer window.

This will copy the Roms folder to your iPhone

You have now installed everything you need to play your SNES games on your iPhone.

When you launch Snes 9X on your iPhone you will be asked to select your Game. Navigate to your Rom and your game will load.

Control for the games is performed by an onscreen virtual joypad which after getting used to works well.

How to Jailbreak the iPhone

Jail breaking the iPhone and the Cydia market place is a slightly controversial subject and one which iPhone-experience.com has not covered until now.
As standard the only way to install Apps on your iPhone is through Apples App Store, this brings several advantages, every App has to meet Apples high quality standards and term and conditions therefore the quality of Available Apps is very high, but it also means that many Apps never get released to iPhone users and this includes many Apps which you may find useful eg Emulators & WIFI tethering Apps.

There is an alternative source of iPhone Apps but to get them you need to perform a procedure called Jailbreaking on your iPhone.
Before you perform the Jailbreaking procedure it is advised that you back up your iPhone with iTunes. You can undo the jailbreaking procedure by restoring your device to factory setting.

To perform a Jailbreak on your iPhone:
1) Open the Safari Web browser on your iPhone.
2) Navigate to http://www.jailbreakme.com

3) Click on the Free button
4) Click on on the Install button.

After a very short break your iPhone will be Jailbroken and the Cydia app will be visible on your iPhones desktop.

Cydia works in a similar way to the Official AppStore and can be used to install some really useful Apps.

ReBound: A Fun and Simple Casual Game for the iPhone

All too often good games are over looked in the App Store in preference to the big name games, this is why we try to write about the smaller lesser known games that we come across.

ReBound is a fun little game aimed at the casual gamer, and the goal of the game is simple, don’t let the other moving moons hit your planet.

You can drag your planet around the screen with your finger as the moons move around the screen, when they hit the edge of the screen they rebound back into play. The longer you survive and move around the more points you score, and when you reach a required score you move onto the next level.

Frequently throughout the game icons will appear on screen which you can pick up and collect, although not all have a positive effect, for example you might find that the moon gets bigger or quicker.

The key to this game is to give it a chance, many players will close the game after a few seconds as the game starts slowly, but give it a few moments and as the games tempo starts to increase it starts to become fast and frantic.

The games presentation could do with a tidy up, and there doesn’t seem to be any sound for the game but if you can look passed this there is a good game waiting to be snapped up at a very reasonable price.

You can install ReBound by searching for it in the App Store.

3 Top iPhone games that have recently been updated

3 of the games that we have previously covered have recently received significant updates.

Splatarat is a fun stress relieving game that we originally covered in This Article

We love the frantic fast and furious action and it’s ideal for short bursts of play. SplataRat has received a couple of small but useful updates. The graphics have received a tidying up and a play again option has been added so that when each game has finished you don’t have to go back to the main screen to start your next game.

Melon Truck is a fantastic physics based game that we originally covered in This Article
The purpose of the game is to score points by projecting melons into Scoring baskets by working out angles and power levels.

In the original release of the game the power was determined by pulling back on the screen, in this new version there is an onscreen power meter and fire button. The new control scheme is more accessible and easy to use, but we preferred the interaction of the original control scheme.
The new version of the software also includes several new levels which is a nice touch
We have been in touch with the author of Melon Truck and a choice of either control scheme will be introduced in a future release.

We liked Math Chomp as it reminded us the classic Nokia Snake game which first proved the potential of mobile phones as gaming devices.

In our original article We expressed concern at the original control mechanism and we were pleased to see that original dpad has been replaced by a virtual track pad which does work better. A tilt control is also available where you tilt the iPhone to move the crock.

If you haven’t checked these games out then do so. They are all worth the money

How to Manage Your Favourite Recipes on the iPhone

The iPhone and iPad are quickly becoming an alternative to traditional printed material, including cooking recipes.
Icook2day’s Favourite Recipes is an iPhone App which comes supplied with 70 recipes, about the same as you would expect in a traditional cookbook, which covers all types of courses from soup and side dishes to mains.

Each section contains several recipes, with each recipe broken down into easy to follow steps, if you hold your iPhone in portrait mode you are presented with the directions listed in steps. If you turn your iPhone into landscape mode each step is presented a page at a time, many with an accompanying photograph of the step.

Where the Icook2day’s iPhone app really has an advantage over a traditional cookbook is that it helps you organise and put together a complete menu and associated shopping list.
You simply tick a box next to the recipe you are going to prepare and the dish is transferred to your menu, and all the required ingredients are added to a shopping list, add more courses to your menu and your shopping list grows. A nice feature is that you can view your shopping list either by recipe or by location on the shopping aisle which makes shopping easier and quicker, and because it’s stored on your iPhone you don’t need to carry paper and pen around with you.

The app also includes a number of advice videos to help improve your cooking skills.
There are other apps available in the app store which have similar functionality to Icook2days apps, but none do it better, and whilst there isn’t a household name attached, the app is only £0.69.

Icook2day’s Favourite Recipes is easy to use, works well and great value for money. Before you spend more money on licensed products you should consider this app first.

Odd Spotting: A Fun Spot the Odd One Out Game for the iPad

Odd Spotting is a fun and challenging Spot the Odd One Out game for the iPad.
With fun colourful graphics the game is targeted at children although there is plenty of challenge in there for adults  on the later levels.

An Easy Level in Odd Spotting

The concept of the game is simple, you are presented with a number of objects on the screen, all are identical apart from 1 exception which you have to identify as the odd one out before a timer runs out.

Featuring over 60 levels spread across 3 difficulties the game offers an ever increasing challenge starting with very easy levels but getting harder quickly.
The simple concept and cartoon style graphics hides a level of excitement and often you get a kick of adrenalin as the timer starts to run out and you are struggling to spot the odd one out. Although it’s important not to randomly press on objects on screen as each time you guess incorrectly the timer decreases at an increased rate.

A more difficult level in Odd Spotting

As a nice touch the on screen character can be changed to either a boy or girl to match the gender of the player. The game is ideally suited to the larger screen of the iPad and due to the details on some of the graphics the game would struggle to be playable on the smaller iPhone.

Odd spotting is fun for all the family, it’s infuriating, addictive and fantastic for short bursts of play, and we heartily recommend it.

Google+ app is now available for the iPhone

Google+ is Google’s new Web browser-based Social Network which aims to compete directly with Facebook. Whilst Still in Beta testing and works on an invited member only basis, it has already attracted many positive comments for its stylish and minimal interface, and being easy to use.Owners of Android phones have had an app available to them for a while now, and the iPhone App has launched today.

The iPhone Google+ Interface

The interface provides quick access through to all the major Google+ functionality, including: Your Stream, Photo management,  Huddle and the impressive Circles.

For those with a Google+ account it certainly makes it much easier to keep up to date by using the service on the move. Whilst it is not certain how successful Google+ will be, they have certainly made an impressive start.

How to View Read and Create QR codes on the iPhone

QR Codes are barcode like images that can be used to share links or contact information is a graphical format.
QR Codes were originally created for stock control on Car Parts but now the use has spread to a much broader field and you can frequently see them used in advertising or mobile tagging.

An example of a QR Code

QR codes work by pointing a reader at the code and a device deciphering the code into a link. This has become popularised by mobile phones apps, that can not only read and decipher the code but also then show you the link in a web browser or email client.

There is a free app for the iPhone called QRReader that can not only decipher QR codes but also create them.

Simply by loading the app and pointing the iPhones camera at a QR Code,  QRReader will quickly decipher the code and open the appropriate application to show you the information, for example if you scan a QR Code on a poster QRCode will read the code and automatically take you to the Web Page set by the advertisers.

Creating a code is also straight forward, in the creator section of the app, you simply choose the type of link that you want to create and then enter the link details and QRReader, you can then save the image to  your Camera Roll or share it through several social networks.

I’ve created the following example QRCode which will re-direct you through to the iPhone-experience twitter Feed.
